Appearance: The Pekin is an attractive, large white duck. The plumage may show a tinge of cream or yellow. They weigh 3.5 - 4 kg with yellow or reddish-orange bill and legs. They are usually bred for meat but are equally useful in the backyard. And if you think the Pekin looks familiar, you've probably seen one on TV. The Walt Disney animated character Donald Duck was based on a Pekin duck. Pekin ducks are yellow as ducklings but grow to be all white as adult ducks.
Others: Muscovy Ducklings.
Age: Normally between 1 day to 14 days old. (sometimes older)
Sex: These ducks are too young to distinguish between males and females. So we are not able to provide specifically male or female baby ducks.
Ducks in general are very energetic and sociable birds, so its highly recommended that ducklings are kept in at least pairs or in bigger groups. It is difficult to tell males and females apart before 8 weeks of age. So if you want a pair you might have to get a 3-4 ducklings and with a bit of luck you will have a pair. Pekin ducklings are yellow but grow to be white adults. Ducks can be a bit messy so are more suited to someone with large and green backyard
Availability: Ducks are generally difficult to find so its recommended to call in advance before arriving in-store and ideally to pre-order your birds so we can call you when they come in. During Winter many breeders slow down or stop breeding altogether , so its a good idea to get your birds before and after this period.
Duckling Temperature Control: Baby ducks will require a continous artificial heat source like a heat lamp or globe lamp to help maintain body heat for the first 3 to 4 weeks of life. During hot weather conditions the heating can be reduced to only at night time. What ever heating source is used it must be one that the ducklings can move away from to cool down. If you unsure or inexperienced with providing this heating it is a good idea to seek expert help and advice.
