Rock Dust

Rock Dust

Rock dust is a natural soil amendment made from finely crushed rocks and minerals. It’s used to replenish essential minerals and trace elements in soil that have been depleted by farming, rain, or erosion. Rock dust can be derived from various rock types, including basalt, granite, limestone, and volcanic rock. See below for more information about each type. Rock Dust typically has lower NPK levels than most other fertilisers, but offers a very wide range of other minerals and trace elements. It's a great companion product to traditional NPK products that lack a wide range of minerals. An exception to this rule is Richgro, which has added NPK levels and has relatively high levels in its product. Rock Dust typically provides minerals such as Silica, Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Sulphur, Zinc, and much more.

Rock dust can come from different rock types, such as:

  • Basalt – rich in silica, iron, magnesium, and calcium
  • Granite – high in potassium and trace minerals
  • Limestone – mostly calcium carbonate, used to reduce soil acidity.
  • Volcanic – contains a wide spectrum of minerals and micronutrients.

Benefits:

  • Re-mineralises soil: Restores depleted minerals for healthier, more nutrient-rich plants
  • Improves soil structure: Helps clay soils drain better and sandy soils retain moisture
  • Boosts microbial life: Minerals support beneficial bacteria and fungi
  • Enhances flavour and nutrition: Produce grown in mineral-rich soils often tastes better and has higher nutrient density
  • Long-lasting: Unlike soluble fertilisers, it slowly breaks down and improves the soil over the years.
