Vitamin C or ascorbic acid deficiency is the most common and most preventable disease in guinea pigs. Adults must be supplemented with at least 10 mg of vitamin C for every kilogram of body weight. Pregnant, nursing and growing guinea pigs need at least 30 mg of vitamin C for every kilogram of body weight. Insufficient vitamin C intake leads to a condition known as scurvy. Clinical signs of vitamin C or ascorbic acid deficiency may include rough coat, anorexia, diarrhea, bleeding from the gums, lameness and pain. Delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections may also occur.

Palatability - The usual supplementation method of adding vitamin C to water often changes its taste, and thus intake may be adversely affected. Daily C has a pleasant flavor and is readily accepted by most guinea pigs.
