DISCONTINUED, PLEASE CONSIDER OTHER MULCHES BELOW. Agrisorb Hemp Mulch Bales are made from chemical-free & purpose-grown Australian hemp. Reduces extremes in cold and hot, reduces emerging weeds, encourages earthworms, discourages slugs and snails, etc.

Agrisorb Hemp Mulch Compressed Bale. Covers 6 to 8 square metres at 50mm depth !

Agrisorb Hemp Mulch is a superior garden bedding. It functions like a mulch and looks like a bedding, giving the best of both worlds. It is easy to spread, natural and long lasting. Ecofibre Industries has developed this mulch product to create throughput in the Australian fibre hemp industry, but Hemp Mulch stands on its own merits too. Compressed bale is 59 x 38 x 23 cm.

Horticultural field trials and preliminary commercial product testing in Tasmania (1999-2003) concluded a highly favourable application for hemp as a surface mulch. They found that several critical factors contribute to the suitability of hemp mulch and its claims as a superior horticultural mulch:

  • The crop is grown specifically for mulch, rather than being an agricultural by-product or waste product.
  • The proportion of bast and hurd within the mulch can be controlled.
  • Cut length or “chop” can be controlled – this confers ease of handling and durability and binding characteristics.

HEMP MULCH APPLICATION IS PRINCIPALLY A SURFACE APPLICATION FOR:

  • General home ornamental, pot plants, vegetable and bedding plantings.
  • Fruit trees and vines.
  • Container mulching (i.e. large shrubs).
  • Compost “helper” and cover – allows effective separation of wet materials to discourage anaerobic conditions.
  • It also provides the added benefits as an erosion and weed mat control.

PRODUCT FEATURES AND ATTRIBUTES OF HEMP MULCH:

  • Ease of handling and “softness” to the hands in its use.
  • Compressed material easy to tease-out and separate for use.
  • Material not prone to “caking” or creating impervious crust skin on surface.
  • Favourable to micro-organisms and biota such as earthworms.
  • Once wetted, fibres will progressively bind due to lignin and pectin content. This means the product is less prone to wind-blowing once laid.
  • Surface of mulch remains generally dry so is less receptive to weed growth or evaporative water loss and frost damage.
  • Superior insulating properties protecting the soil in hot summer or cold winter periods.
  • Durability of 4 to 9 months depending on thickness and situation.
  • Discourages snails and slugs due to its “terrain”.
  • Fully degradable and adds humus to soils.
  • pH neutral.
